Jackpot

Jackpot is a term is gambling that refers to large investment returns that derive over a short period of time.

This means that players can win large sums of money, in a short time, and in many cases – without making a large wager. The term was coined in the 19th century, and it originated from a five-card draw poker; in these games, players were required to declare a hand that had a pair of jacks – or a better hand, if he had one. This was intended to open the bidding, as it allowed players to contribute to the ante before every deal. As gambling games continued to develop, the term jackpot began referring to what it means today. Throughout the years, the jackpot described a situation where winnings would build over time, before paying out. Today, the term jackpot is mostly associated with slot games – both real-live slots, and video slots. Also, the term became a part of everyday speech, referring to winnings in various situations, and not just in gambling games. For instance, if someone has gotten a good position at their workplace, people will say “he won the jackpot”.
